I am a slave in the kingdom of Christ whom I serve with all my heart, my soul, and my mind (Ephesians 6:6) .
God is sovereign over all the Universe. While on the Earth I’m here to do my portion of the work for Christ (Psalm 103:22) (Ephesians 4:28). My job duties include but not limited to being a wife, a mother, grandmother, a friend and a good neighbor.
In the morning, before I open my eyes, I have a song in my heart (Psalm 108:2). I wake up singing to the Master. I open my eyes; my first thought is what is on His agenda today? I know that I have certain job duties, that goes without saying. Tend to my husband, my body, and my home. I clean up and prepare for the usual job duties I have. The Master gave me a job, Monday-Friday, 8-5pm. I work from a home that he has provided for me. I work through the day, stopping ever so often and checking in with the Master. He has created an incredible book that I study (1 Timothy 4:5). Sometimes he tells me to go to a certain scripture or chapter of the manual. Other times I start at one portion of this love letter and begin writing out his commandments, decrees, his promises. On paper and in my heart. In the afternoon, I pick up my grandkids from school and drop them off. And get back to work.
After 5 I decide what to do for dinner, cook and spend time with my husband. Then my 2nd job begins. I open the Bible and pull my laptop and begin to study as if I’m studying for a test (2 Timothy 2:15). I want the Master to feel like I’m equipped… I want to feel like I’m equipped (Hebrew 4:12). When something needs to be done, I want him to think, Surry knows how to do that, I will send her (2 Timothy 4:2). I want the Master to trust me with any tasks needing to be done.
There is so much work to be done before his Son comes back. And none of us know when that day will come, so we have to be on alert. You know, prepared for at any time he may appear (Matthew 24:44). Meanwhile, the inhabitants on this earth are really hurting and many of them don’t even know it (Romans 2:19) (Romans 5:6). They walk around with a big hole in their heart and try everything to fill it (Ephesians 2:12). They are slaves too but not to the King of Kings. They are slaves to their own flesh, or slaves to other inconsequential people. They may even be slaves to an evil kingdom (Romans 6:16).
As I go about serving my Master, he makes me feel at home. I can go to him about my feelings, my thoughts. I can ask him what he thinks and he shows me by his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides me and speaks to me in a small still voice (John 10:27). He is my guide in the Book showing me what how the Master likes things. How the Master requires things to be. A part of being a slave is knowing how things must be done. Proper etiquette and remaining Holy is a huge part (1 Corinthians 14:40) (1Peter 1:15). I must represent the Master and so doing something halfway will not do. I don’t always get it right. But the Master is kind and loving and patient with me. He says I have potential and so he sticks with me.
You may ask yourself; how did I become a slave? Well, basically from the beginning of time Adam and Eve pretty much signed us all up for slavery. Before they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they were both representatives of God and had dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26). After eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they became enslaved to the god of this world and to their sin. Basically, you are either a slave of the Lord God, or you are a slave of the world. But either way we are slaves. You must choose who is your master, you cannot serve two (Matthew 6:24).
Back to those hurting people. A lot of the Bible talks about the world needing the Holy Master (John 3:16). The Lord God created the Earth and all its inhabitants so really, He is the one and only master (Genesis 1:1). His Son was crucified and died on a cross paying a ransome for me (1 Peter 1:18) (1 Corinthians 7:23). He then rose from the dead, has the keys to hell and death, and lives at the right hand of the father (Ephesians 1:20-21). He will be returning and we must tell everyone about who the Son is so they may have the privilege of becoming his slave. (Acts 1:11) (1st Corinthians 9:19) (John 6:39). Being a slave for Christ is the most honorable and the least I could do because of what he did for me.
Being a slave has many benefits that no other Master can offer. Because I’m a slave for Christ, I am sealed for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). I am an heir of God and joint heir with Christ (Romans 8:17). The little suffering, I do on this earth, which is my glory (Ephesians 3:13), pales in comparison of what he suffered to purchase me (Hebrews 9:13). God chose me as his slave long before I was ever born (1 Peter 1:20). As a slave, I am a living stone, a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:5). I am even called a child of God (Galatians 4:6-7).
Another one of my responsibilities is to be the eyes and ears of God. He is omnipresent; however, it is still my duty to bring petitions to him (Philippians 4:6). I must be constantly communicating with the Master (1Thessalonions 5:17).
The other day I heard that one of his children is sick. I fell to my knees right away and began my report. “Lord God, I am your slave. It is my duty to report that one of your children is sick and I know it is my responsibility to bring you this news. I know you are a healing Master, and I need to report all problems in your kingdom. I know that once I bring a situation to your attention you will respond as you see fit (Matthew 6:10).You know what must be done and I don’t have to worry or fret about it because you are the Master (Philippians 4:6).You will let me know if there are instructions for me (Psalm 40:8).But you are the Master, the buck stops with you” (Philippians 1:6). And after my report, I need not worry about the problem anymore. There is truly a sense of peace after I give my reports. The burden in my heart is no longer, as I have done the right thing to bring this to the Master (Philippians 3:21). The slave-that’s me- can now go about the Master’s business (Ephesians 6:6).
It sounds strange to call yourself a slave, the idea may even offend. But I have never been so filled with joy and peace since I decided His will was so much better than my own. He knows everything-the past, present and the future.
So why not just obey him.
And watch the Master.
