Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.
How many times have I used this scripture, and it has given me such boldness to step forward in faith, trusting Jesus will help me with whatever I lay my hands to.
But did you know there is another way to look at this scripture?
I was looking through an interlinear bible, and the wording is just a little different- nuanced, if you will.
First off, an Interlinear bible is a specialized study tool that displays the original biblical languages—Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament—with a literal, word-for-word English translation directly beneath each word.
In the interlinear bible the scripture reads this way:
Philippians 4:13 For all things I have strength in the One strengthening me.
So for me, that takes on a whole new dimension to this bible verse we all learned in Vacation Bible School.
To me, it feels as though the first translation, the one we are all familiar with, is focused on the physical things I need to accomplish. Jesus helping me to complete the things I need to do, like finishing a project at work, finish the laundry, or starting a new blog to share with friends and family-
The task at hand, so to speak.
Jesus then opens our eyes to understand this scripture to also mean spiritual strength. Jesus gives us strength for the intangible. Sharing your testimony, encouraging someone who is down or helping a friend through loss and grief.
Remember that song we use to sing, "...we are weak, but he is strong"
The One strengthening me is Jesus.
The One strengthening you to trust in him completely and lean on His understanding and not your own. As usual, Jesus is multi-dimensional, muti-layered and more than sufficient in all things, for you and me.
