Colossians 3:23-24: Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.
I have always been a work horse. Either in my career or in the kingdom of God, I love to work. I enjoy helping others and putting my hand to the plow so to speak. The problem is that I tend to work so much, I sometimes forget to rest and get burned out. The other thing is that I never think I'm doing enough and again back to burn out.
God wants us to rest. On the seventh day He rested and so if He rested shouldn't I rest as well?
Exodus 20: 8-10 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: 9 You are to labor six days and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates. 11 For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.
Psalm 127:2 In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food— yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves.
So in the spirit of trying to find balance in my life, I decided to create a Life Job Description. I thought if I detailed everything that I should be doing then I would stop worrying if I am doing enough.
I then realized that I can give myself some grace and be confident that I'm fulfilling all the job requirements God has asked me to do thus far.
After writing it all out, it brings everything into perspective. I'm doing exactly what Jesus is asking me to do.
The other thing I'm am learning to do is to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I never thought about sitting back and just being happy about what I have accomplished so far. Somewhere along the way I had the impression that if you finish one thing, there was no time to rest and and enjoy the moment of completion. You had to be onto the next task and on and on and on.
Ecclesiastes 3:10-12 I have seen the task that God has given the children of Adam to keep them occupied. 11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts, but no one can discover the work God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and enjoy the good life. 13 It is also the gift of God whenever anyone eats, drinks, and enjoys all his efforts.
So God is happy with me enjoying my efforts? Enjoying a good life?
Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 Here is what I have seen to be good: It is appropriate to eat, drink, and experience good in all the labor one does under the sun during the few days of his life God has given him, because that is his reward. 19 Furthermore, everyone to whom God has given riches and wealth, he has also allowed him to enjoy them, take his reward, and rejoice in his labor. This is a gift of God, 20 for he does not often consider the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with the joy of his heart.
So, I would encourage you to complete your own Life Job Description. You can use the template below or just get a piece of paper and start writing out all the things you do. I think you will be suprised like I was. And maybe you can give yourself a little break, take a little time to rest and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
